More About Julie

For almost fifteen years I owned and ran Noble Rot Wine Warehouses Ltd in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. I started it from scratch in April 1990 and sold it on in October 2004.

Julie and her father at Noble Rot Wine Warehouse, 1990

Noble Rot was a small but successful, predominantly retail business. In its heyday it was recommended as ‘one of the top 100 places to buy wine in the UK’ by The Which? Wine Guide. It was a business that sold a great deal of good wine. And it wasn't all brands and predictable labels - we sold plenty of unusual and esoteric styles. In actual fact, the average bottle of wine sold at Noble Rot was well above £5 when the national average was still languishing around £3.

The early nineties were tough times to start up a new business. It was about five years before the company began to truly flourish. The real breakthrough came once I fully understood the importance of ‘product’ and ‘promotion’ and how, when you get them right and combine the two, you have a very powerful marketing tool. I worked out what I needed to do to recruit the customers we wanted and I learned how to work the database. I learned how to use features and discounts cleverly and how to give the range both style and personality. Today I draw on my experience and knowledge to advise and assist other small and medium-sized companies. I show them how they can avoid making some of the time-consuming and costly mistakes I made myself and help them fine-tune the marketing techniques they need to drive their business forward.

Before Noble Rot, I held various jobs in sales and marketing within the wine trade. I have worked for Majestic, Peter Dominic and Wilsons Wines.

I champion the specialist independent business and have many friends and family with small and medium-sized businesses of their own. I relish any opportunity to get to know other companies. I am prepared to work very hard to help them get their message across and build that all-important profitable relationship with their customers.

“I found Julie invaluable during our first 12 months in business. Her knowledge of the total wine market is excellent - and her finger is always on the pulse in terms of what is available and from which shipper. Her marketing knowledge helped us to develop our brand image, which has been well received in the local area. Thanks Julie!”
